Construction – construction materials

Property developers are exploiting inland waterways to overcome planning restrictions on unloading lorries delivering construction materials on the road side.

Our tugs and barges recently delivered a range of construction materials to a property development site on the Regent’s Canal in Kings Cross. During the initial construction phase several thousand tonnes of steel beams were delivered to the site by barge and lifted into position using the on-site tower cranes.
In the later stages of the development granite faced cladding panels were delivered to the site and lifted into position with the on-site tower cranes. In the final stages of the construction project window units and glazing panels were also delivered to the site by barge.

Barging Benefits

Space gain: The developer effectively extended the very limited site working space by storing construction materials in barges moored alongside the site.

Improved workflow: By storing construction materials in barges the site engineers were able to make better use of the tower cranes by minimising the number of lifts required to get components into position.
